Description
English 1102 is the second required, writing-based English course. It is both a composition course and an introduction to literary study at the college level. The writing assignments are based loosely on the required readings, which are selected to represent four major literary genres: lyric poetry, the short story, the novel, and drama. Most of the writing will not,
however, consist of critical essays about the reading selections; instead, the assignments are designed to involve you in the creative process that produced the literary works and is
necessary to a sophisticated reading of them. During our meetings, we will discuss both your writing and the assigned readings.
Prior to each regular class, students are required to submit comments or questions
about the reading material to the online web forum I have set up. These comments will be the basis for the day's class discussion, as well as one source of your participation grade.
Required Texts
James Joyce, Dubliners
William Shakespeare, Cymbeline
Kurt Vonnegut, Slaughterhouse-Five
W.B. Yeats, Selected Poems and Four Plays
Also: A full-sized, hard-cover collegiate dictionary and a grammar / style handbook.
Grading
Graded papers 60%, participation 20%, final 20%. Participation will be based on regular attendance and contributions to the forum (with each absence after the first week negating three forum contributions). The resulting participation score will be curved, hence with a median grade of C; perfect attendance and a perfect contribution record will guarantee an A for participation. No other part of the grade will be curved or scaled. Late assignments will not be accepted. There are no excused absences. Assignments may be handed in early when an absence is unavoidable, but participation will still suffer.
Schedule
Reading assignments must be completed on the first day listed in the schedule. The assignments are subject to change, and students are responsible for consulting my website for updates.
