The German Democratic Republic's National Anthem, "Auferstanden aus Ruinen"

On November 5, 1949, the song "Auferstanden aus Ruinen" (words by Johannes R. Becher and music by Hanns Eisler) was made the national anthem of the German Democratic Republic. After the construction of the Berlin Wall and a mid-sixties shift in GDR policy on German reunification from pro to con, the text of the song, with its repeated references to "Germany, united Fatherland," became increasingly unacceptable. From the seventies on, only the melody was played on official occasions, mirroring the situation in West Germany, whose Deutschlandlied began with the offensively nationalist lyrics "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles, Über alles in der Welt." The Deutschlandlied is now the anthem of the united German Federal Republic.
